What responsibilities do they have?
  • Performing physical laboratory testing, physical examination, and diagnostic imaging techniques such as ultrasound and radiography to determine the presence and nature of the animal’s abnormal condition
  • Setting broken bones and dressing wounds
  • Providing advise to clients about the nutrition and feeding, health, breeding, hygiene, and care of their pets
  • Attending and participating in prevention programs that aim to fight the spread and  occurrence of animal diseases
  • Providing obstetric services to animals
  • Performing surgical procedures and providing medical treatment to animals, and administering and making prescriptions of analgesics, drugs, and local and general anaesthetics
  • Autopsying animals to find out the cause of death
  • Immunising animals against infectious disease, and informing health authorities of the presence of outbreaks of infectious animal disease
  • May work for commercial firms that produce pharmaceutical and biological products
  • May specialise in a particular specialty area such as dermatology, chiropractic, cardiology, or critical care
