As of around 2008 over six million tourists arrived on our shores, making it one of Australia's biggest export industries.
In 2007 alone these such travellers purchased in the region of twenty three billion dollars worth of goods and services.
The Australian tourism industry is worth in the region of ninety billion dollars and employs almost half a million people. Most businesses providing services into this industry have fewer than twenty staff, meaning that it also supports Australia's small business economy too.
A recent upswing in visitors from China and India has been a real boost to our tourism sector, especially when smaller operators in regional areas have been hit with a big drop in local demand, mainly due to Australians choosing to travel internationally rather tnan domestically to take advantage of our stronger dollar.
This means that a career in the travel or hospitality industries is probably better sought working for some of the larger players who tap into visitors from these countries.
